Leaving “Normal Life” Behind
Wake up. Work. Pay bills. Sleep. Repeat.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. For years, our family of five has been trapped in the never-ending rat race, juggling careers, routines, and responsibilities, while missing out on the moments that really matter.
We’re parents of three, ages 3, 10, and 14. One of our children is home educated so In theory, that should make family life flexible, but in reality, it’s just another layer on top of busy work schedules.
Family time has been squeezed into weekends or evenings.
Holidays are planned around what we can afford, not what we truly want to do. And the bigger picture? We were missing out on the enjoyment of watching our children growing up.
The Problem with “Normal Life”
Our culture pushes us to keep up with the Joneses. To buy more. To work harder. To measure success by stuff, not experiences. We have got caught up in that trap, chasing material things while life quietly passed by.
We started asking ourselves:
-
Are we really living, or just existing?
-
Are our children growing up while we’re too busy working to notice?
-
Is there a better way to balance family, freedom, and financial responsibility?
The answer became clear: there is a better way.
Why We’re Choosing a Different Path
We want to see our children grow up — not just in pictures or video clips, but in everyday moments. We want to be present for the milestones, the little achievements, and even the chaos of daily life.
We want a life defined by:
-
Adventure — exploring the world as a family
-
Connection — more time together, less rushing
-
Meaning — experiences that matter, not things we own
-
Freedom — financial and lifestyle flexibility
Leaving “normal life” behind isn’t about being reckless. It’s about choosing a better way to live: a life that balances responsibility with freedom, work with play, and earning with living.
What Leaving Normal Life Looks Like for Us
We’re still in the preparation phase, but we’ve started taking tangible steps:
-
Downsizing and selling belongings: deciding what’s essential and what can go
-
Planning finances and budgeting: understanding what we need to fund freedom without going broke
-
Researching destinations: figuring out where we want to go without overcomplicating things
-
Testing remote income streams: experimenting with side hustles and faceless online content
-
Balancing family life, work, and freedom: learning that life isn’t perfect, but it’s ours
Our Family’s Motivation
Every decision we make is driven by our kids and our family values:
-
We want to be present parents, not just providers.
-
We want to show our children that life isn’t just about stuff, but about experiences and choices.
-
We want to teach them independence, curiosity, and the courage to explore.
We’re doing this not because it’s easy, but because it’s worth it.
